Kirtch Wildlife Management Area - Lund, NV

Owned by Nevada Department of Wildlife, Kirtch WMA is home to several warm springs known collectively as Flag Springs. Past alterations have caused declines in habitat for federally endangered White River spinedace populations due to loss of habitat features within each spring system. StreamWise worked with NDOW and the RIT recovery team to develop restoration designs for each channel that would enhance spinedace habitat and help meet recovery goals.

Past channelization and diversion practices prior to NDOW control resulted in severe habitat declines due to lack of natural channel features. The restoration and enhancement design utilized locally sourced rock to provide step-pool pocket habitat as well as channel grade control and stability. Alterations such as ditches and diversions were obliterated and impediments to upstream migration either removed or altered to allow for fish passage.

Recent population surveys indicate White River spinedace inhabiting nearly every new pocket water feature formed along the channel, with populations extending significantly further downstream than seen in past surveys. Channel stability remains excellent following the 2010 construction.
